Bringing Light to Kawempe: A Christmas Outreach of Healing, Learning, and Joy

On 19 December 2025, the spirit of Christmas came alive in the Kawempe Slums as the Rotary Club of Saturday E Jazz, in partnership with the Alton Basketball Academy, hosted a transformative outreach programme designed to bring holistic care to a community with pressing needs. The project was rooted in a careful needs assessment conducted by Alton Football Academy, whose team walked through the community, engaging directly with residents to identify not only their most urgent challenges but also the interventions that would be most feasible and impactful during the holiday season. What emerged was a picture of a community yearning for better access to healthcare, improved learning environments for its children, and a moment of joy and celebration.

Responding to these identified needs, the outreach unfolded as a full day of integrated support. A medical and health camp was established at the heart of the community, becoming a beacon of hope for residents who often struggle to access basic healthcare services. More than 2,000 community members received medical consultations, addressing a wide range of health concerns that might otherwise have gone untreated. Recognising the particular challenges faced by elderly residents, the team conducted eye testing on site and distributed over 500 pairs of eyeglasses to those with poor vision, restoring not only their sight but also their ability to navigate daily life with independence and dignity. Beyond healthcare, the project invested in the community’s future by renovating a classroom block, ensuring that pupils can now study without interruption from the elements. And because Christmas is also a time for celebration and togetherness, the children of Kawempe were treated to drinks, eats, and a festive cake, bringing smiles and a sense of holiday magic to young hearts.

The impact of this outreach will continue to ripple through the Kawempe community long after the day itself has passed. For the elderly residents now equipped with prescription eyeglasses, clearer vision means improved safety, greater participation in community life, and relief from the strain of poor sight. The 2,000 individuals who received medical consultations have gained not only immediate care but also awareness of their health status, empowering them to seek further treatment or make lifestyle adjustments. Most visibly, the renovated classroom block stands as a lasting asset, providing a safe and conducive learning environment where children can study regardless of rain or sun, directly supporting their educational progress and future opportunities.

Sustainability for this project was woven into its very execution by ensuring that the community itself became a partner in carrying the work forward. Community leaders were present throughout the outreach, witnessing firsthand the impact of the medical camp and the renovation. They were actively encouraged to continue promoting timely medical checkups among residents, using this event as a catalyst for ongoing health awareness. The leaders were also inspired to look more closely at pressing needs within their own community and to explore ways of organising similar outreaches in the future, whether independently or through new partnerships. In this way, the Christmas outreach in Kawempe was never intended to be a single moment of giving, but rather a spark that ignites lasting community-led action and care.
